Zújar boasts an historic centre consisting of
an Arab Quarter, and whitewashed houses - some dating back as far as the
17th Century. There is also an enormous area of cave-houses - which
stretch out over the hill of Abatel in a huge multicoloured patchwork effect -
as well as a more recently constructed area, which has sprung
up since the beginning of the 1970's and which stretches out into
the plains.
The urban area itself stretches between Cerro Jabalcón
and Cerro Jaufí, alongside rich plains, still with traces
of agriculture and traditional settlements.
The oldest areas - their
place names of Arab origin - still retain their Moorish flavour, an intricate network
of narrow streets which lead out onto Zújar's Rambla - or main
boulevard - which divides the town centre in two.
