The town of Zújar is situated in the Subbéticas, in what is known as the Granadan Altiplano. Its unique landscape is the result of its geographic location between the Baza Sierra (mountain range) to the south and the Baza Valley Basin and Pozo Sierra to the north. Zújar lies on the slopes of the Cerro Jabalcón, an individual peak which reaches an altidude of 1.496 m. The town centre extends over a series of plateaus eroded over time by water which make up a network of gullies and riverbeds flowing down to the River Guadiana Menor from the right (the foothills of the Pozo Sierra) and from the left (from the plains and foothills of the Baza Sierra). Today the river is home to the Negratín Reservoir, which takes advantage of the areas ideal orographic and hydrographic qualities.

Although the limestone land-scape is bare and dry, the centre of of Zújar lies in an area rich in subterranean waterways. The many springs have encouraged the development of a lush area of fertile land from the earliest times. Pine forests grow on the lower slopes of the north face of the Cerro Jabalcón , the result of refores-tation programs during the middle of the 20th Century. To the north, the climb takes in

ravines, dry riverbeds and the River Guadalentín, flowing towards the Pozo Sierra and to Cazorla. Moving in this direction you arrive at Carramaiza, which rests in the plains of the same name. Continuing upwards you reach the borders with the province of Jaén.

The landscape around Zújar and Carramaiza is unqiue in the province of Granada due to the great contrast provided by the diversity of its geography.
